I’ve heard a lot of hate sent toward women as a whole and toward one woman in particular today. If we as humans continue to propagate a culture in which we ask “What did SHE do wrong” or “How could SHE have let this happen,” we’re only increasing the problem.
All violence, but especially sexual violence, cannot be something people are afraid to talk about. Part of the power that people give to rape is that they speak about it in hushed tones, afraid to speak of it too loudly. Stand up when everyone else is sitting down, afraid to discuss the-action-which-should-not-be-named. This isn’t the magical world of Harry Potter; this is real life.
Reality must be met head-on. Don’t blame the victim, alleged or otherwise. Blame the culture. Then go a step forward. Try to change it. I love what poet Jeremy Loveday has to say about rape culture today, and how he’s ready to change the way we react to it. Rock on, Jeremy.
